U.S. Senate Approves Markwayne Mullin as DHS Secretary
President Donald Trump had nominated the Oklahoma Republican in early March, moving to oust Noem amid mounting internal pressure linked to the January killings of American citizens Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good in Minnesota — deaths carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents that sparked fierce political backlash.
Opposition Democrats had openly demanded Noem's dismissal and went a step further by backing an impeachment resolution directed at her.
At last week's confirmation hearing, Mullin vowed to instill pride across the department's 280,000 employees spanning 22 agencies. Lawmakers, however, wasted little time pressing him on the controversies that defined his predecessor's tenure.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal challenged Mullin over whether ICE would persist in conducting warrantless home entries. Mullin responded directly: "We will not enter a home or place of business without a judicial warrant unless we are pursuing an individual."
Sen. Maggie Hassan pushed Mullin to define how his leadership would diverge from Noem's, pointedly questioning whether he would extend a "green light to lawless behavior."
Mullin offered a firm but measured reply: "I will operate within the parameters and the policies and the laws that you guys set for me."
