Spain’s PM Warns US-Israeli Strikes on Iran Could Trigger Global Crisis

(MENAFN) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday denounced the US-Israeli military strikes on Iran, cautioning that the offensive could spiral into a prolonged conflict with serious global repercussions, including rising living costs, according to reports.

“We are against this disaster. Governments should be here to improve the lives of people, not make them worse,” Sanchez said in a televised address. “It’s unacceptable that some use the fog of war to hide their failures and, along the way, line the pockets of the same few people as always.”

The Spanish leader called on all sides to halt hostilities immediately.

“No one knows what will happen, or the objectives of those who started it, but we have to be ready for this to turn into a long war,” Sanchez said. “We do not like the Iranian regime, which represses its people, especially women, but we demand a peaceful solution.”

He highlighted the immediate human and economic toll, noting that the attacks have already resulted in hundreds of deaths in homes and schools while causing disruptions in stock markets and energy prices.

“Massive wars often start because of a series of mistakes, unknowns – we cannot play Russian roulette with the lives of millions,” he said, drawing a parallel to the onset of World War I. Sanchez also likened the attacks to the Iraq war, which he said increased terrorism, drove up the cost of living, fueled migration, and left the world less secure.

While Spain has become one of the most outspoken critics of the joint Israeli-American strikes among Western nations, Sanchez emphasized that the country is not isolated in its stance.

“We stand with the values of our constitution, the principles of the EU, the UN Charter and international law, and therefore with peace,” he said. “It is naive to believe violence is the answer or that blindly following others is leadership.”

Sanchez concluded by stressing that people across the globe desire peace and prosperity rather than further conflict, which he said “only benefits a few.”
