India Faces Backlash for Silence on US-Israeli Strikes in Iran

(MENAFN) The Indian government has come under scrutiny for not condemning the US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, which killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and 786 others, including schoolchildren, as stated by reports.

Critics point to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Israel as poorly timed, occurring just two days before the strikes. The opposition Indian National Congress criticized the trip, with leader Rahul Gandhi saying the government’s silence “undermined” India’s long-standing foreign policy principles centered on sovereignty and peaceful dispute resolution. He added that escalating tensions were pushing “a fragile region toward wider conflict,” threatening millions of Indians living in the Middle East. Gandhi urged condemnation of both the US-Israeli strikes and Iran’s retaliatory actions.

Other opposition figures echoed the criticism. Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh called on Modi to speak out against what he described as “the tyranny of America and Israel,” warning that it could have global consequences. Communist Party of India leader D. Raja labeled the attacks “unilateral” and a “grave violation of international law and the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter.”

Amid the criticism, Modi emphasized the need for peace and stability in the Middle East and held talks with Gulf leaders, condemning Iran’s retaliatory strikes.
