Bus Stop, Pedestrian Improvement Project Begins in Augusta County, City of Waynesboro

STAUNTON - Work began this week on a project to improve safety and access for pedestrians and public-transit users at three locations in Augusta County and the City of Waynesboro.

The locations to be improved include:

  • Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) near the intersection with Route 792 (Sangers Lane/ Brand Station Road) just east of Staunton: Improvements include bus pull-offs along eastbound and westbound Route 250 with concrete pads and bus shelters on both sides, ADA compliant sidewalks, a marked crosswalk and pedestrian signal that connect the bus stops. It also includes the renovation and pavement marking for parallel parking along nearby Rowe Road.
  • Route 11 (Lee Highway) at the intersection of Dick Huff Lane in Verona: This improvement at the entrance of the Augusta County Government Center will add a bus shelter along southbound Route 11 with a connecting sidewalk, and a crosswalk with a pedestrian signal.
  • Route 250 (Main Street, Waynesboro) near the intersection with Lew Dewitt Boulevard/Pelham Drive and at the Amazon/Big Lots intersection (stoplight): Improvements to bus stops along eastbound and westbound Route 250 include a landing pad and shelter on the eastbound side. Improvements will provide crosswalks, pedestrian push buttons and pedestrian signal heads, and installation of ADA-compliant sidewalk to connect bus stops to crosswalks.

Initial construction is at the Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) location near Staunton at the intersection with Route 792 (Sangers Lane), where motorists may see right lane closures on eastbound and westbound Jefferson Highway from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

During this construction phase, the current bus stop locations on Route 250 just east of Staunton also will shift as follows:

  • On Route 250 westbound at Sangers Lane, the stop will be shifted west toward the entrance of the Sleep Inn.
  • On Route 250 eastbound at Rowe Road, the stop will be shifted east toward the output of Rowe Road.
  • Both stop locations will have the bus stop signs moved to the new boarding and deboarding locations.

In July 2026, VDOT awarded a construction contract for $2,110,496.53 to Richardson-Wayland-Ferreira, LLC of Roanoke, Va.

This project received funding from Virginia’s SMART SCALE program for prioritizing transportation improvements.
